Focus rooms

Two hours a morning with one thing in them.

You pay once, before the first morning, and the page lists all twelve dates first. You decide once, in September, so that in October there is nothing to decide. Turning up is the only thing left to do.

The same people each time, and each page says how many. Ten minutes of standup, an hour of work, a break, another hour. The shape holds from week to week, so nothing stands between sitting down and starting. A room in Lisbon, or a call that works the same way.

Standups

Say what the morning is for, before you spend it.

Three lines: what you got done, what today is for, and what is in the way. Ten minutes, one voice at a time. Naming the one thing turns a vague morning into a specific one, and hearing the others name theirs puts the room to work before anyone opens a laptop.

Three fields, and we keep it at three. Add a fourth and you have built a status report for somebody to read.

Inside a focus room

Each focus room opens with one. Ten minutes, one person at a time, then the room goes quiet and you work until the break. Take the room and the intention comes with it.

Or on its own

Some people want the intention without the two hours. Book a standup by itself and you get fifteen minutes every weekday to decide out loud what the day is for, then you leave and work wherever you were going to work anyway.

Facilitating

Somebody has to hold the two hours.

A facilitator finds the room, fixes the dates, and runs the morning. You start the standup, hold it to ten minutes, and end the session. You teach nothing and you review no one's work. You hold the shape, so the rest of the room can put its attention somewhere else.

We pay you for each session you deliver, weekly, after it has happened. That is a real cost to your cashflow and we would rather you read it here than find it in week two.

A room
Somewhere a room full of people can work in silence at the same hour every week. A café that tolerates you will not hold.
ID and a phone number
We check government ID and verify your phone before you run anything. People hand money and their mornings to a stranger, so we find out who you are first.
Somebody will visit
For the first twenty facilitators, one of us stands in the room before it opens for booking. We will not do that over video.

The awkward questions

What happens if I miss a morning?
Nothing. You paid for the seat rather than for attendance, and the session ran for the rest of the room, so we do not refund it. Your host marks who came, because a room where half of it drifts off stops working for the half that stayed.
Can I stop coming?
Yes, and the page for each room states the terms in euros, worked out from its own dates. Before it starts you get all of it back. Part way through you get back the sessions you have not used, less a deduction that goes to your host, who held a seat they could not resell. Leave near the end and you keep the seat without the money.
What happens if the host cancels?
Your host reschedules that session, or refunds it when they cannot. If they cancel the whole run, you get back everything they have not yet delivered, including anything you had already forfeited. We keep no money for sessions we cancelled either.
Where does my money go?
Most of it to your host. We charge a fee for finding you, then a much smaller one each time after that, because the host found you the second time and we did not. We pay hosts per session delivered, weekly, after the fact, so we are not sitting on money for mornings that have not happened.
Who else is in the room?
The same people each week, and the page for each room says how many seats it has. Your host sees who holds one and who turned up, because they have to run the session. They cannot export the group's contact details, and no employer sees anything about one person.
Can my employer see any of this?
No, and we built no setting we could switch on by accident. A company buying seats sees totals: seats used, money spent, attendance across the company. Individual attendance, individual standups and individual commitments sit behind a wall a company account cannot reach by any route, exports included. Let your employer watch you and the room stops working, which takes the product with it.
